Extreme Performance Tuning of Windows XP
Warning : This may not be suitable for all. Follow these steps if you want your system to be lightning fast.
Disclaimer : The list is not complete. I came up with this list from the experience i got from working with my 5 year old machine with 512 MB Ram and partially working motherboard.
- Disable Visual Effects
Right click on My Computer, select Properties, go to Advanced -> select Settings under Performance -> Select Adjust for best performance. - Set virtual memory to double of your RAM. Keep the Initial and Maximum size same.
- Keep the size of your C: drive (drive where you install Windows) at 10 GB
- Install all programs in D:\Program Files\
- Disable sounds (control panel)
- Disable system restore
- Disable Error Reporting
- Disable Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop if you do not use them
- Remove Desktop background
- Remove all unwanted startup programs
- Disable all unwanted services.
- Uninstall all unwanted programs.
- Defragment all disks
- Disable Desktop Cleanup Wizard
- Uncheck “Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching” after right clicking each drive.
- Run CheckDisc once in a while
- Unshare all useless shared folders and files.
- Uncheck hide inactive icons.
- Run diskcleanup once in a while
- Delete system restore files
- Remove Windows Messenger
- Use classic start menu
- Disable hibernation if you are not using that. NB: Hibernation is a better method than sleep for saving time.
